FLAG OF THE SULTANATE OF SULU ACCORDING PIERRE SONNERAT

The description of this flag by Pierre Sonnerat on his account of 1774-1781 is apparently in contrast with the description made by Thomas Forrest who in his book talk about a flag with the arms of the Sultan: "the gates of Mecca , red, on a white background ."
We say apparently because Sonnerat described the flag as "white and black bordered .."but he doesn't say if the Mecca's door was black or red.
The black was probably added to identify the personal standard of the Sultan or the Rajah Muda or simply as a decoration

FLAG OF THE SULU SULTANATE

The flag is described on the account of 1779 by Thomas Forrest .
On the book"Guerras pirĂ ticas de Filipinas", a report on the spanish war against piracy in the Sulu Archipelago , written , by Don Vicente Barrantes Moreno, we find out a note (chapter IV page 49 ) on the flag of the Sultanate: "..el castillo donde tremolaba una bandera blanca..." which means :.. " The castle where flied a white flag..."
That is another evidence of the existence of the white flag of the Sultan of Sulu in 1755.
On another two dutch accounts dated 1844 circa we can read : " The flag of Sulu are the gates of Mecca, red on a white field.. " And :"..Sulu has a special flag : white with a blue hoist , with a red
curled monogram, wich they say does represents the door of Mecca..." .
